The Montreal Canadiens will try to take a commanding lead in their Eastern Conference first round series when they visit the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 2 on Friday night. The Canadiens won the opening tilt of the best-of-seven series on Wednesday, claiming a 5-4 victory on Dale Weises overtime tally. Its not surprising the game went beyond regulation considering the Atlantic Division foes saw three of their five regular-season meetings in 2013-14 enter OT. After dropping a wild one in the opener, the Lightning hope to even this set before it shifts to Montreal for Games 3 and 4. The third meeting is set for Sunday at the Bell Centre with Game 4 scheduled for Tuesday. Weise tallied with 1:52 remaining in overtime to give his club a leg up on Tampa in the series. An in-season trade acquisition for Montreal, Weise scored off a pretty backhand feed from linemate Daniel Briere to end the entertaining contest. The wrister from just below the right circle beat a hapless Anders Lindback on his stick side after Briere successfully held off Tampa Bay defenseman Eric Brewer behind the net to deliver a perfect pass. The goal marked the first postseason point for Weise, who was held off the scoresheet in each of his previous six playoff games with the Vancouver Canucks. Briere, meanwhile, notched his 110th career playoff point in his 109th game with the assist. "Its not an easy thing, the roller coaster of emotion youre going to feel in playoff games," Briere said. "Thats part of the experience factor, knowing to stay composed and stay focused" Brian Gionta and Lars Eller picked up a goal and assist each for the Canadiens, while Tomas Plekanec and Thomas Vanek also lit the lamp for the third-place team in the Atlantic Division. Carey Price earned the Game 1 victory despite stopping just 21-of-25 shots. "Its nice to come in and get one here but its still a long series and they have a great team," said Gionta. "It was back-and-forth and itll be no different the next game." Lightning star Steven Stamkos scored twice, including the game-tying goal with just over 6 1/2 minutes left in regulation. Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn also produced goals in the setback. Subbing for the injured Ben Bishop, Lindbacks first career NHL playoff start went well despite the loss, as the rangy Swede came up with 39 saves. "We didnt get the win so its tough to find positives," said Stamkos. "Five goals against is way too many in the playoffs. Hopefully now everyone has a taste of playoff hockey, they know what its all about." Lindback will be back in net on Friday for his second career playoff start. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said he is hopeful Bishop could return in this series, but can only see that happening if it extends past four games. Tampa could be without Ondrej Palat, who left Game 1 in the third period with an upper-body injury and did not return. Palat has 23 goals and 36 assists in 81 games as a rookie this season and is one of the leading candidate for the Calder Trophy. On Thursday, Cooper said Palat will be a game-time decision for tonight. This is the second time the Canadiens and Lightning are meeting in the postseason, with the Tampa sweeping Montreal in four games in the Eastern Conference semifinals during its 2004 Stanley Cup championship season. Ho-Sang is a highly regarded prospect, as seen in TSNs Midseason Rankings. This was Game 3 of their playoff series and that wasnt the only strange incident in Londons 10-2 win over Windsor. With the NHL Draft coming up on June 27 and free agency opening on July 1, discussions between NHL general managers are heating up towards a busy off-season. Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. Defensive Depth TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting the Toronto Maple Leafs have considerable interest in unrestricted free-agent defenceman Dan Boyle. LeBrun says one source believes Torontos interest is "serious." The Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers are also interested in the services of the 37-year-old. LeBrun says the New York Islanders still remain an option with the Montreal Canadiens likely out of the running after re-signing Andrei Markov. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported on the following issues: Patience is a Virtue Minnesota Wild forward Dany Heatley and former Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone may have to be patient in free agency according to Dreger. Dreger says their willingness to take one-year contracts will draw attention from more teams. The Lightning used their second compliance buyout on Malone on Wednesday while Heatley will become an unrestricted free-agent on July 1. Draft Talk Conversation regarding the Florida Panthers first overall pick should heat up Thursday ahead of Fridays NHL Entry Draft. If offers for the top pick dont improve, Florida intends to hold on to it. Canucks Complex Dealings The Vancouver Canucks are still trying to trade Ryan Kesler but this is a complicated negotiation. Its believed Kesler has identified just two teams in the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks. That puts rookie general manager Jim Benning and the management of the Canucks in a tough spot because theyre just negiotioation with the two teams. Maybe its possible that the Canucks try to pull in their horns in an effort to encourage Kelser to expand his list. Blackhawks Hope to Keep the Band Together GM Stan Bowman and the Chicago Blackhawks are very eager to make sure the star component remains intact for a lengthy period of time. Were talking about how the new CBA is going to impact the superstar model of player and certainly Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toewws qualify as such.dddddddddddd No longer is it allowed to frontload and go with that 10, 12 or 15-year mega-deal. Now we know its a maximum of eight years so its not inconceivable that, as long as the salary cap climbs to around $75 million in 2016 that Kane and Toews could come in around $11-12 million each. Iginla and Alfredsson Drawn Together Jarome Iginla and Daniel Alfredsson could have an impact on each others future, depending on whether they both get what they want, which is to sign where they played last year. Iginla wants to stay with the Boston Bruins and theres talk theyre negotiating on both a two-year deal and perhaps a one-year deal maybe very similar to the contract he signed with the Bruins last year with a cap hit of $1.8 million with a bonus structure that deeply impacted the Bruins. If they cant get a deal done in Boston, then the Detroit Red Wings are among the teams that are keenly interested in Iginla as well. The Red Wings also have interest in Alfredsson, who is believed to be coming back but he hasnt made it 100 per cent certain yet. He works on his own timeframe, similar to Teemu Selanne but Im also told hes willing to be flexible. ----------------------------------------- Shopping Around Despite a good conversation between the team and his agent, Paul Stastny plans to test the free-agent market before making a decision on his future. Adrian Dater of the Denver Post spoke with Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic, who said Stastny wants to field offers before seeing if his current team will match the amounts. Dater also reports Sakic saying that he isnt put off by Stastnys plan to field offers because hes earned the right to be in that position. Vinny On The Move? Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Flyers general manager Ron Hextall might be willing to move veteran forward Vincent Lecavalier if he agrees to waive his no-trade clause. In the report, Hextall is quoted as saying hes spoken to Lecavaliers agent but would not elaborate further. Carchidis story also talks about Flyers draft prospects and the players they are looking at selecting in the upcoming NHL Draft.
