Postby lw789 » Wed Nov 07, 2018 7:28 pm

LAKE LOUISE, Alta. - Lindsey Vonn left Lake Louise with both confidence and the belief she can ski faster. After winning her first downhill in almost two years, the U.S. ski star was second behind winner Lara Gut of Switzerland in Sundays World Cup super-G.World Cup overall leader Tina Maze of Slovenia was third and Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., was 20th.With two knee surgeries in as many years, this was the second straight season Vonn launched her comeback at the Lake Louise World Cup. This return looks more promising than a year ago.It meant a lot to have worked so hard for so long and to finally be back in a position where Im contending every race, Vonn said Sunday. Thats more than I could have hoped for.Vonns downhill victory Saturday was her first since Jan. 26, 2013. She tore two ligaments and broke a bone in her right leg a month later while racing super-G at the world alpine ski championships.More ligament damage sustained prior to her arrival in Lake Louise last year limited her to just four starts. Another surgery in January sidelined her again. With a career 60 World Cup victories, Vonn is two away from matching the womens record of 62 held by Annemarie Moser-Proell of Austria. The four-time overall World Cup champion and first American woman to win Olympic downhill gold in 2010 will return to Colorado to catch up with speed training she missed this fall. Vonn didnt get back on snow until Oct. 1.I have a lot of speed races left in the season, so now I have the confidence I need, Vonn said. Hopefully by the next race, Ill be guns-a-blazing and ready to really put down some good super-G runs.Vonn finished just under four-tenths of a second back of Gut, who claimed her second super-G win in as many years at Lake Louise.Gut didnt make the top-10 in downhill races Friday or Saturday, but set a blistering pace Sunday in a time of one minute 18.46 seconds.Downhill is something that is complicated for me in Lake Louise. Its always a fight, Gut said. Super-G is way more fun for me. I would love if we raced two super-G and just one downhill here, but its not going to happen. After winning the first downhill of the season Friday, Maze looked unhappy with 10th the next day. The reigning Olympic champion in downhill and giant slalom was smiling again after the super-G.That was quite a shock yesterday, Maze acknowledged. I had a lot of adrenalin in my blood.I still have something to do in super-G, but Im really happy with my skiing. Coming here in Lake Louise, I had a big wish to win here once and it happened.Maze and Vonn are deadlocked atop the overall downhill standings. The prize purse in each of the three womens races in Lake Louise was C$118,000 with $35,000 going to each winner.Yurkiw posted a career-best fourth in Saturdays downhill to add to the excitement at the finish line around Vonns victory. The top 30 skiers in each race earn World Cup points, so Canadas lone female downhiller is ranked 11th after opening weekend. Its such a great base, foundation, for the season, Yurkiw said. Its more than we hoped for. Im taking a lot out of this weekend.Slalom and giant slalom specialist Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., missed a gate in Sundays super-G. The technical races are her specialty, but Gagnon races some speed events in order to compete in the combined event.Valerie Grenier of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was 32nd in her World Cup debut.Gagnon heads this week to Are, Sweden, for a giant slalom Friday and a slalom Saturday. The next World Cup womens downhill is scheduled for Dec. 20-21 in Val-dIsere, France. David DeCastro Jersey . Murray — to set the record straight — had just lost an Australian Open final for the fourth time, including three at the hands of Djokovic. Murray won the U.S. Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 to end decades-long droughts at the majors for British men, but was clearly upset at his inability to crack it in Melbourne after this 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0 defeat.I wish you a wonderful wedding and many kids, Djokovic said, kicking off his trophy acceptance speech. Murray smiled. His fiancee, Kim Sears, applauded from her seat in the crowd. Shed already drawn attention for her shirt that was emblazoned with the words Parental Advisory Explicit Content — a humorous reaction to being caught on camera apparently using expletives during Murrays semifinal. Its slightly different thinking for me now since I became a father and a husband, Djokovic explained. I apologize for changing the subject. His outlook on life had changed between his two most recent trips to Australia. He married long-time partner, Jelena, and the couple had a son, Stefan, in late October. He said his first Grand Slam title since his marriage and the birth of his son had a deeper meaning, more intrinsic value.Getting married and becoming a father was definitely something that gave me a new energy, something that I never felt before, he said. And right now everything has been going in such a positive direction in my life. Im so grateful for that. So I try to live these moments with all my heart.Djokovic now has eight major titles, including his five in Australia, where he won his first Grand Slam title in 2008 and then won three straight from 2011 before losing in the quarterfinals last year to Stan Wawrinka. The 27-year-old Serbian is now second on the list of all-time Australian Open winners — behind only Roy Emerson, who won six titles in the 1960s and who was in the crowd Sunday. After two tough first sets decided in tiebreakkers, when there was eight breaks of serve and plenty of tension, Djokovic broke open the match after the sixth game of the third set and won 12 of the last 13 games.dddddddddddd In the first set, he tumbled to the court, lunging to reach a volley, and needed treatment on his right thumb — shaking his right hand repeatedly. The second set was disrupted for five minutes by a political protester running onto the court, causing a lockdown of sorts, and another momentum shift. In the third set, it was fatigue, with Djokovic appearing to be struggling badly.I was just weak. I went through the physical crisis in the matter of 20 minutes and, honestly, didnt feel that too many times in my career, Djokovic said. But knowing in the back of my mind that it was a similar situation two years ago in Australian Open final, where two sets went over two hours, was a similar battle. Then I felt that I had some physical edge over him in that match. That was in back of my mind. That was something that kept me going. After the match, Djokovic had plenty left in his legs, able to high-five a long line of ballboys after the presentation.Novak has won five times here now, theres no disgrace in losing to him, said Murray, who now trails 16-8 in career head-to-head matches.Murray and Djokovic have known each other since their early junior days, and often hit against each other for practice. Seeing Djokovic in pain apparently unnerved Murray. The third set was frustrating because I got a bit distracted when he, like, fell on the ground after a couple of shots, Murray said. It appeared that he was cramping, and then I let that distract me a little bit. Thats what Im most disappointed about, not so much the fourth set because I think, especially at the end of it, he was just going for everything, and it was going in. But the third set was more frustrating for me.Obviously had opportunities in the first three sets. Then the fourth set ... he was just ripping everything. Once he got up a break, he just loosened up and was just going for his shots. I couldnt recover.Djokovics win on Sunday followed up on top-ranked Serena Williams win in the womens final Saturday night against Maria Sharapova, giving the 33-year-old American a sixth Australian and 19th Grand Slam title.
