Figured it out...
Referencing that image, I had to make a much larger polygon (say, a cube), and cut that sphere out of the center. So now I have a cube with a round cavity in the middle.
Then, I moved the cube left, right, up and down until the corners of my base piece that I wanted to remove stuck outside that cavity. Then I was able to "cut" the cube and leave the base piece, sans corners.
I did all of this viewing in 3d sketch mode, not solid.
It was a backwards process, but it worked. And I've been able to apply the same "process" to other designs.
Hope this helps someone else.
